A tribute to Michel Rolland 🕊️🍇🌎

One of the most influential oenologists & wine consultants of his time. The first to operate wine at a truly global scale. ✈️

Born in Pomerol, Bordeaux 🇫🇷, into a winemaking family, he built a career that extended far beyond France — shaping wines across continents long before global consulting became the norm. 

From the 1970s onwards, Rolland became a pioneer of what is now known as the “flying winemaker” model, working with over 150 wineries in more than 20 countries.

His imprint was unmistakable: riper fruit, softer tannins, precision in blending — wines designed not only to express terroir, but to resonate with a global palate. 🍷

His rise coincided with the era of Robert Parker, when taste and scoring systems began to influence production decisions at scale.

This moment didn’t just elevate certain wines. It helped define what quality meant for an entire generation.

From Napa Valley to Argentina, and across Bordeaux itself, his influence reshaped regions, styles, and expectations. 🔎

But influence at that level is never one-dimensional. For some, he represented precision, consistency, and elevated standards. For others, a shift toward stylistic convergence.

What remains undeniable is this: Michel Rolland didn’t just shape wines. He helped shape how the world understands them. ✨

And many of the conversations we have today — around identity, terroir, and authenticity — exist within the framework his era helped build.
