The CIA reportedly used a classified system called “Ghost Murmur” to locate a downed American pilot in Iran… by detecting his heartbeat from 40 miles away.

The pilot, publicly known only as Dude 44 Bravo, was shot down over southern Iran after his F-15E was hit. He was injured and forced to hide in a crevice on a 7,000-foot mountain ridge, where he survived for two days while Iranian forces actively searched the area with a bounty placed on his capture.

His survival beacon wasn’t enough for rescue teams to pinpoint his exact location.

That’s when Ghost Murmur was used.

The system was developed by Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works — the same secretive division behind iconic aircraft like the SR-71 Blackbird and the U-2 spy plane.

It uses long-range quantum magnetometry to detect the faint electromagnetic signals produced by the human heart with every beat. AI software then filters out background noise and isolates that specific signal from everything else in the environment.

Normally, signals this weak can only be detected in a hospital setting with sensors placed directly on the chest.

This marked the first known operational use of the system.

Before this, it had only been tested on Black Hawk helicopters, and reports suggest it is now being prepared for integration into F-35 fighter jets.

The system performs best in remote, low-clutter environments like the Iranian desert, where there are minimal competing human signals.

What stands out isn’t just the rescue… but what it represents.

AI in defense is no longer just about analyzing data after events happen.
It’s now being combined with advanced sensing hardware to detect signals that were considered physically impossible to capture at long distances just a few years ago.
