My SECOND choice in a shooting position during a hockey game would be from the ICE LEVEL CORNERS.

Lenses / Focal Lengths: 100-400mm, 70-200mm, 24-105mm, 11-24mm (Creative Shots), Fisheye (Creative Shots), 300mm (for Opposite End of the Rink).

PROs: 1) Great view of the action in front of the net. 2) Awesome for capturing face-offs. 3) Good for very tight headshots of players. 4) Decent view for "bench fly-by" goal celebrations from either team. 5) Isolated shots of attacking players carrying the puck can be captured quite easily. 6) If facing the bench, you can capture some nice images of coaches or players during the play. 7) Goal celebrations can look good from any position on the ice level.

CONs: 1) Defending players usually have their backs to you unless there are in front of the net. 2) The referee may obstruct the view of scoring chances for certain plays. 3) Coverage at the opposite end of the ice is difficult without a 300mm or 400mm lens on a spare camera body. 4) If your arena has holes in the glass, you will need a good stool to sit on. If you don't have a proper "chair" to help your posture you will put extra strain on your back during those long games.

Most clients want ice level action shots as opposed to concourse level shots taken from up high in the stands. For this position, the PROs outweigh the CONs in most shooting categories, with the exception of capturing action in the opposing end of the ice. You will need to have a long lens on a separate camera body such as a 300 or 400mm when the play is 200 feet away. If you have the luxury of a specialty zoom lens like a 100-400mm or a 28-300mm, those would work just fine too in most cases.
