## Caption

I love these UD Portraits insert cards from @upperdecksports brand new 2020/21 UD Series One hockey cards. This snap of Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck was taken just prior to the start of training camp.

What goes into capturing a player headshot? A lot more than you would expect.

First of you, you have to arrive at the site and build your studio set, depending on the location, this could take up to an hour. Equipment required: 3 strobe lights (2 main lights for front, 1 for harilight), 3 light stands, a standard canvas backdrop, a backdrop stand, light modifiers (umbrella or softbox, personal preference), a light meter, sufficient power cables (if applicable), step stool, and camera gear.

When players arrive, I look to provide consistency for all photos. I make sure their hair is nice and tidy. When they put their jersey on I hand-straighten every jersey making sure the shoulders, the neck, and logos are all straight. This is critical for the editing step.

I use a program from called from CameraBits called Photo Mechanic to ingest the photos from memory card to computer tagging appropriate metadata into the photo.

Lastly, I use Adobe Lightroom Classic for some light edits to crop, adjust white balance, and correct any levels that need to be fixed. When you are dealing with 40+ players - each with different body shapes - you have to find consistency. That's why it was super important to precisely hand-straighten the jerseys in the shooting stage. I use the jersey logo, the shoulders and the top of head as reference points between images. If you can align those, all photos will look the same.

Once headshots are submitted to the league you will see them used in media guides, TV broadcasts, video games, and hockey cards. It's a lot of work, but the final product is worth it.
