Astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen are scheduled for a 10-day mission that will take them around the Moon. It will be the first crewed lunar mission since 1972.

Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville has been involved with mission preparations. The upper stage of the SLS rocket was built at the United Launch Alliance plant in Decatur.

Artemis II is scheduled for a 5:24 p.m. Central Daylight launch time on April 1 at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

There’s also a full “Pink Moon” expected. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac the name “comes from the early spring bloom of a wildflower native to eastern North America.” This flower is often called phlox moss or “moss pink,” and is in full bloom about this time.

The moon is expected to reach peak fullness around 9:11 pm CDT. The skies over Alabama will be mostly cloud-free for moon-watching, according to the National Weather Service.
