People with federal student loans may get a notification from the U.S. Department of Education soon about an important update to their repayment options.

The federal goverment has ended the student loan repayment plan known as Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE), and launched the new Reimagining and Improving Student Education (RISE) plan.

The SAVE plan offered lower repayments, loan balance forgiveness and no interest accrual. Trump argues the RISE plan is better and will save taxpayers more money by shifting responsibility back to the borrowers.

Under the RISE plan, borrowers can choose from two new repayment plans: The Repayment Assistance Program and the Tiered Standard Plan.

The plan also includes canceling the Grad PLUS loan. Borrowers have 90 days to enroll. The new repayment plans launch July 1.
