Hamdija Alukic, 70, was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Mobile and held in the Baldwin County Jail. He is suspected of committing war crimes in 1992 against civilians in Bosnia and Herzegovina, according to federal records.

Alukic was released on March 20. AL.com left a message with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s office regarding his release but has not heard back.

Bosnian prosecutors opened an investigation into Alukic’s alleged war crimes in 2013 and the state has sought his extradition from America since 2015.

At some point Alukic made his way to Wilmer and has been living a “quiet” life in Alabama, according to Fox10 News. A neighbor told the outlet that they were shocked to find out Alukic is accused of committing war crimes against civilians.

“That just completely blows my mind cause I never seen that coming, that’s pretty wild,” the neighbor said. “They had dogs, chickens and they would sell eggs to Walmart and stuff. They were always cool.”

Federal officials are seeking to extradite Alukic to Bosnia and Herzegovina where he will be tried.
