Sarah is a scullery maid. Lowest servant in a wealthy household. Her job: Heat water for the family’s baths. Carry it from the basement kitchen up two flights of stairs.
Five gallons. Boiling. Multiple trips daily.
She’s been working since 6 AM. It’s 8 PM now. Fourteen hours. The pot weighs forty pounds. Sarah weighs fifty.
The stairs are narrow. Steep. Completely unlit. She can’t see. Can’t balance.
The pot tilts.
