## Caption

This comparison shows how Earth’s curvature affects distance. Lines drawn at higher latitudes, like across Europe and northern Asia, appear long on flat maps but are actually shorter in reality. Near the equator, like across central Africa, Earth’s circumference is largest, so distances stretch farther. This happens because circles of latitude shrink as you move toward the poles. Flat map projections also distort scale, making higher regions look bigger and misleading our sense of true distance across different parts of the planet.
