Meet an astronaut training for a long-duration mission aboard the International Space Station.

As a child, a photograph of Earth known as ‘The Blue Marble’ sparked jaxaastromakotosuwa’s dream of becoming an astronaut and seeing our planet from above. After a career in international civil service—including WMO—he has now realized that dream as a jaxajp astronaut and is preparing for his journey into space.

In his upcoming mission, Makoto aims to deepen our understanding of Earth and help close critical gaps in global observations.

“During my training and mission, I look forward to continuing our collaboration and sharing the story of human space exploration through various channels. I firmly believe that space exploration can and will benefit life on Earth—including by strengthening our ability to observe our planet today and help protect tomorrow,” said Makoto.

Space-based observations play a vital role in weather monitoring and forecasting, supporting #EarlyWarnings and tracking greenhouse gas concentrations. WMO works closely with space agencies, including the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, to ensure this critical data reaches countries worldwide. The ISS experiment facility Kibo, which is developed and operated by JAXA, is home to a wide range of research activities that contribute to people around the world.

国際宇宙ステーション（ISS）での長期滞在ミッションに向けて訓練に臨む宇宙飛行士をご紹介します。

子どもの頃、「ブルー・マーブル」として知られる地球の写真に出会ったことが、諏訪 理が宇宙飛行士となり、宇宙から地球を見たいと夢見るきっかけとなりました。世界気象機関（WMO）を含む国際機関でのキャリアを経て、彼はJAXA宇宙飛行士としてその夢を実現し、宇宙への旅立ちに向けた準備を進めています。

今後のミッションにおいて、諏訪飛行士は地球への理解をさらに深め、全球観測における重要なギャップの解消に貢献することを目指しています。

「訓練やミッションを通じて、私たちの協力関係を継続し、有人宇宙探査の物語をさまざまな形で共有していきたいと思っています。宇宙探査は、現在の地球観測能力を強化し、明日を守ることにつながるなど、地球上の人々の生活に必ず貢献すると強く信じています」と諏訪飛行士は語ります。

宇宙からの観測は、気象監視や予報を支え、#EarlyWarnings（早期警戒）や温室効果ガス濃度の把握において重要な役割を果たしています。世界気象機関（WMO）は、日本の宇宙航空研究開発機構（JAXA）を含む宇宙機関と緊密に連携し、こうした重要なデータが世界中の国々に届けられるよう取り組んでいます。
また、JAXAが開発・運用するISS実験施設「きぼう」では、世界の人々の生活に貢献する幅広い研究活動が行われています。
