In the constellation Draco, almost nine billion light-years away, a massive galaxy helps astronomers see its distant neighbors in this image captured by NASAHubble.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The behemoth galaxy in the center of this image warps the light of galaxies behind it, making the light appear bent as if by a lens: a phenomenon known as gravitational lensing. An important consequence of this distortion? Magnification – which can help astronomers study distant galaxies by acting as a vast natural telescope which magnifies objects that would otherwise be too faint or distant to see. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Hubble’s sensitivity and high resolution allows it to see faint and distant gravitational lenses that cannot be detected with ground-based telescopes, whose images would be blurred by the Earth’s atmosphere. ⁣⁣
