Texas Tech baseball tied its weekend series against No. 17 West Virginia University with a 4-1 victory Saturday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.

A pitching duel ensued before Tech scored the three runs it needed in the eighth frame to take the final lead of the game. Following a 1-1 tied game in the eighth inning, the Red Raiders' batting efforts picked up steam after West Virginia inserted its relief pitchers.

“Everybody had a part in it,” said Tim Tadlock, Tech head coach. “It was a really good team win. Fun baseball game. I mean, when games are close like that, they're fun, and it's what baseball's about.”

West Virginia graduate relief pitcher Reese Bassinger entered the contest in a 1-1 tie with two runners left on base in the eighth frame. He surrendered two runs immediately before being replaced. Tech’s batting lineup added an insurance run to end the scoring side.

Tech junior relief pitcher Logan Bevis denied the Mountaineers a single score in the ninth frame. Two batters grounded out before Bevis struck out the final batter to conclude the game and claim the victory.

The game started with a change of pace from Friday’s game. A combined 29 hits during a 12-8 contest was something both teams struggled to replicate as Tech redshirt freshman starting pitcher Jackson Burns and West Virginia redshirt junior pitcher Maxx Yehl led off on the mound.

Both teams endured a pitching duel as six consecutive scoreless frames occurred. Burns concluded the contest with 106 pitches thrown through 7.2 innings and 75 strikes. Yehl made his exit during the same frame after completing 7.1 innings and throwing 113 pitches.

“That's the definition of an ace,” Tadlock said. “Coming off a loss, when a guy walks out there and gives you a quality start and keeps you in the game and put you in position to win the game. That's the definition of it.”
