According to apnews, police say he killed his wife before killing himself. Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said that both were found at their northern Virginia home in Annandale after their teenage son called 911 shortly after midnight on Thursday.

Davis noted that the couple, who ran a family dentistry practice, were going through a divorce, and that Justin Fairfax had recently been served paperwork related to it. “That may have been a spark. Detectives will figure out if that led to this tragedy here,” said Davis. Cerina Fairfax filed for divorce last July.

CBSNews reports that both of the couple’s teenage children were present in the home during the incident, and the caller said he thought his mother had been stabbed. However, when police arrived at the home, bullet casings were found near her body. Justin Fairfax was found upstairs with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Davis said during Thursday’s briefing, “This has been an ongoing domestic dispute surrounding what seems to be a complicated or messy divorce.”

Justin Fairfax served as Virginia’s 41st lieutenant governor from 2018 until 2022. In 2019, a woman accused him of sexually assaulting her in 2004, and another woman accused him of rape when they were both college students. Fairfax said those encounters were consensual.
