Criminologists have a term for what we're really asking #Charlotte #employers to do when we talk about fair chance hiring: creating conditions for desistance.

#Desistance — the process by which individuals permanently exit criminal behavior — is not primarily driven by fear of punishment. Decades of research show it is driven by access to adult social bonds: stable employment, committed relationships, and meaningful roles in their community.

When an employer opens a door to someone returning from #incarceration, they're not taking a charitable risk. They're providing one of the most empirically validated interventions in criminology. They're changing the conditions that either sustain or break the cycle.

The Brookings Institution found that employment directly reduces reoffending. SHRM Foundation found that employers who hire people with records report high satisfaction with those employees at rates over 85%.

Charlotte employers have an opportunity this Second Chance Month: become a fair chance employer, partner with CCT Charlotte's LifeWorks! supportive employment program, and invest in second chances while solving your own workforce challenges. The business case and the community case are the same case.
