Your photos / video are boring. Here’s how to fix it.

1. Environmental Details. I ALWAYS shoot these shots. Wide angles of the environment. Tight details of the scenery. Sometimes slow shutter drags to convey motion. While these aren’t part of the deliverables, my clients always LOVE these shots as they drastically elevate Instagram Carousels with compounding imagery that tells a story.

2. Backlight your subject. I always try to backlight my subject. This helps for a few reasons. Having the sun behind your subject aids for a more flattering result on their face, it also ensures they are not squinting while looking at the camera, and of course, makes for a natural hair light for subject separation.

3. Compression. I tend to use 50mm - 85mm for these shots. It helps compress the background making for larger than life results, therefore, making your subject the epic main character of the image.

Bonus tip. Direction. Being in front of the camera is awkward, and awkwardness shows on camera. I like to build a rapport with my clients prior to shooting, make them feel comfortable and positive, so that way when I snap the photo of them, they have their guard down and look their best.
