Saw some wild horses out by Bragg Creek the other day! Fun fact: a group of horses is called a "herd".

Some people also refer to them as feral horses, or crown land horses.

From what I've read, wild horses tend to form family groups called bands, which will include a dominant male (stallion) and several females (mares), and the wee itty bitty offspring (foals).

Alternatively the group could be made up of younger males who just prefer to hang out together, until such time as they form their own bands.

I am not a horse expert so I can't tell you if this group is a band or just some friendly bros.

The main predator for them is the gray wolf but can also include cougars. They go for the foals first obvs.

The lifespan of wild horses is approximately 15-20 years due to the harder life they live compared to domesticated horses. Extreme weather, lack of food, injuries and no vet care will do them in sooner. Domesticated horses can live 30+ years comparatively.

If you ever see wild horses, best to stay back a bit because they can nip you with their teeth and it will hurt a lot. They can also kick really hard, and they spook easy. Stay safe!
