Here’s what nobody in the jewellery space wants to say out loud.

🔍 316L VS 304L — NOT THE SAME THING

Most demi-fine jewellery is marketed as 316L stainless steel:surgical grade, corrosion resistant, the good stuff. But a large chunk of what’s actually being sold? It’s 304L. Cheaper. Less resistant to moisture. And far more likely to tarnish when it meets your skin.

⌚ WHY WATCHES AND JEWELLERY AREN’T COMPARABLE

Luxury watches use 316L, or even 904L. But they use it solid. Thick. Polished or brushed to last decades. Jewellery is a different game… thinner, more intricate, finished with a layer of PVD or electroplating to get that gold or rose-gold look. That layer? It wears. It always wears.

💧 WHAT ACTUALLY CAUSES TARNISH

Sweat. Perfume. Moisturiser. Chlorine. These aren’t extreme conditions, they’re just Tuesday. And they’re enough to break down a plated surface over time, regardless of what the base metal is.

🚩 SO DOES ANTI-TARNISH JEWELLERY EXIST?

Not really. “Anti-tarnish” is a claim about the base metal, not the finish, not the plating, not the reality of daily wear. It’s a marketing word dressed up as a promise.

🌿 WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERS — CARE

Any jewellery, at any price point, will last longer if you treat it well. Take it off before swimming, showering, working out. Keep it away from perfume and harsh chemicals. Store it properly. That’s it. That’s the secret the industry won’t sell you because it doesn’t make them money.
