The EJ257 is dead. Subaru killed it. Which means the VA STI is the last platform you'll ever build around that motor — and prices reflect it.

The 2015-2021 STI came with the same EJ bottom end Subaru's been refining since 2004. It's not the most modern powerplant, but the aftermarket support is absurdly deep and the tuning knowledge base is decades thick. If you're buying one to build, you need a plan before you need a car.

Here's how to approach it:

→ Stage your power mods correctly — the EJ's glass internals have a hard ceiling on stock block, and ignoring that ceiling is how you end up on r/subaru with a spun bearing story
→ Suspension transforms the VA from a compliant daily into something that actually rotates — coilovers, endlinks, and rear sway bar before you touch power
→ 18x9.5 +38 is the sweet spot for fitment on stock fenders — aggressive but not "I need fender work" aggressive
→ Donor selection matters more than you think — rust, previous tunes, and beat clutches will eat your build budget alive

The VA generation is entering that phase where clean examples are getting harder to find and rougher ones are getting cheaper. That's the window. Know what you're looking at before you pull the trigger.
