Numbers 31 is one of the most difficult passages in the Old Testament, and it raises serious moral and theological questions that I could no longer ignore during my deconstruction.

In this video, I walk through what the text actually says about war, captive women, and what happens after the battle. I’m not adding to the story or interpreting it through later theology, I’m looking at the passage as it’s written and asking what it means.

As someone who spent 20 years as a pastor, this wasn’t a new issue for me. But there came a point where I stopped trying to explain it away and started taking the text at face value.
