Massive Attack and Tom Waits release "Boots on the Ground"—the Bristol duo's first new music in six years, and the first original work from Waits in fifteen. The track pairs Massive Attack's characteristically dense and ominous production with Waits delivering anti-war lyrics that are unflinching in their imagery.⁠ ⁠ An accompanying film, made by Massive Attack in collaboration with US photo artist thefinaleye, draws on documentary imagery from pandemic-era Black Lives Matter protests and the current wave of ICE raids across America. The montage arrives in the direct aftermath of the nationwide "No Kings" demonstrations—portraying, in the band's words, "a momentous American epoch yet to be named."⁠ ⁠ The release comes days after Robert Del Naja was among more than 500 people arrested at a Trafalgar Square demonstration opposing the UK government's proscription of Palestine Action. It is a ban the High Court had ruled disproportionate and unlawful. Del Naja, who attended holding a sign stating his opposition to g*nocide, described his arrest as unlawful.⁠ ⁠ Massive Attack shares, "It's a career honour to collaborate with an artist of the magnitude, originality and integrity of Tom, but this track is arriving in an atmosphere of chaos. Across the western hemisphere, state authoritarianism and the militarisation of police forces are fusing again with neo-fascist politics. Seen within the American emergency, or seen through the eyes of citizens in Minneapolis, or Tehran; this track contains pulses of callous impulse & abandoned mind."⁠ ⁠ The 12" vinyl release carries a spoken word B-side from Waits entitled "The Fly," his first solo original in fifteen years.
