How Bladee Transformed Underground Collectives 👀👇

One of the most notable groups in online music circles consists of Sweden’s very own, Bladee, Ecco2k, Thaiboy Digital & Whitearmor. As pioneers of the cloud rap genre, each member has their own stylization of the sound and their influence is not hard to come by, but artists like Xaviersobased, Joeyy & even 2hollis wouldn’t exist without the impact of Bladee, specifically.

2hollis spoke on this in 2022 with Pigeons & Planes saying, “Everyone knows I owe a lot to Drain Gang, big reason I’m even doing this. Bladee was the first dude who I was like, you can be a rapper as a white boy and not be corny.”

Bladee met the other Drain Gang members throughout different classes & mutual friends in the 2000s, and tried out many varying renditions of DG. As music kept releasing, fashion and art direction also proved to be of substance, as rappers like Playboi Carti & Ken Carson wouldn’t be rocking the same fits without the style of the Stockholm superstar.

Not only was the vision unique, Bladee’s vocal deliveries and beats were otherworldly. Being ahead of his time, while also allowing himself to take inspiration from the likes of Lil B and Yung Lean, really hammered home how special it was to be a part of his world. For instance, members of Working On Dying wouldn’t be some of hip-hops go-to beat makers if not for their project with Bladee in 2017.

All throughout the 2010s, Bladee established his presence as a force not to reckoned with, because even if the masses hadn’t quite “got it” yet, his die-hard fanbase kept growing to the point where now in the 2020s, it isn’t frowned upon to show love to Bladee. Charli XCX, PinkPantheress, Skrillex & Oklou are just some of the popular icons that have worked with Bladee post-covid.

His recognition is not stopping anytime soon with double single “Love Is A State / Eyelash” showing listeners, even over a decade into the game, that his infectious melodies won’t run dry. And on the visual side, his new video for “Magic Misery” is just as authentically aesthetic as when he was unknown.

Are you a drainer?
