In 2020, Thundercat pulled up on Kenny Beats at The Cave and immediately started chugging Yerba Mate like it was nothing 😭

Within minutes of walking in, he had already downed multiple cans, and by the time the session got going he was grabbing his fifth. Even Kenny looked concerned, saying “your heart is in danger” to which Thundercat replied with “No it’s not. You know what’s dangerous? The 2020 election.”

Yerba Mate has about 150mg of caffeine in one can, and drinking that much that fast can spike your heart rate, increase anxiety, and put real stress on your body. Downing multiple cans back-to-back like that isn’t just funny, it’s genuinely risky if taken too far.

But that moment kind of explains Thundercat as an artist. His music is unpredictable, slightly unhinged, but still controlled enough to turn chaos into something musical. Even in the middle of all that energy, he still locked in, picked up the bass, and helped create something that only he could make.
