Is Wireless letting Ye “Runaway”? 🤔

With recent news of Wireless Festival announcing Ye (fka Kanye West) as a headliner this July, major sponsors have started pulling out. Pepsi was first, with Diageo and PayPal following shortly after. Despite the backlash, Wireless is still standing firm with Ye still set to headline.

Wireless, one of the biggest festivals in the United Kingdom, would mark Ye’s return to the stage there for the first time in 12 years. Fans are already gearing up for a full 3-day headline run, despite memories of his last appearance—an hour-long rant, he still stands as one of the festival’s most talked-about moments.

But serious discussions now underway, as the situation has reportedly reached the UK Parliament. Keir Starmer told The Sun, “It is deeply concerning Kanye West has been booked to perform at Wireless despite his previous antisemitic remarks and celebration of n*zism. Everyone has a responsibility to ensure Britain is a place where Jewish people feel safe.” The situation draws parallels to when Tyler, The Creator was previously banned from entering the country.

But Melvin Benn, managing director of Festival Republic, the company behind Wireless, responded with a statement:

“Having had a person in my life for the last 15 years who suffers from mental illness, I have witnessed many episodes of despicable behaviour that I have had to forgive and move on from. If I wasn’t before, I have become a person of forgiveness and hope in all aspects of my life, including work.”

“Forgiveness and giving people a second chance are becoming a lost virtue in this ever-increasing divisive world and I would ask people to reflect on their instant comments of disgust at the likelihood of him performing (as was mine) and offer some forgiveness and hope to him as I have decided to do.”
