ICYMI: This week Elise Bennett bennettforbiodiv, our Florida and Caribbean Director, went live from outside of the courtroom to give updates on our Alligator Alcatraz case.
 
Tune in for the latest update on where the Center and our allies stand following the most recent hearing in the case to protect Big Cypress National Preserve.
 
In June 2025 Friends of the Everglades and the Center for Biological Diversity, represented by Scott Hiaasen, Paul Schwiep, Earthjustice and Center attorneys, sued the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Florida Division of Emergency Management and Miami-Dade County to stop the project. The Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida joined the lawsuit.
 
This week, the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard oral arguments regarding a preliminary injunction we won with our allies to halt the construction and operation of the massive detention center known as “Alligator Alcatraz” in Big Cypress National Preserve.
 
We’ll post more updates on our legal work to stop “Alligator Alcatraz” when we have more news to share.
