Hi, I’m Dinesh, a doctor at Gold Coast University Hospital. I work in the emergency department, but I’m also involved in research. I have a spinal cord injury and use a wheelchair. 👋
 
I grew up in Sri Lanka during the war, then moved to Australia as a ten-year-old. I went to school in Byron Bay and Brisbane. I trained as a lawyer first, then became a doctor. When I was in law school, I experienced depression. The doctor who treated the depression inspired me to become a doctor myself. 
 
My mum loves to say that by helping one person, we may not change the world, but may change the world for them. That is the essence of medicine, I think. I come to work for our patients, but it never feels like work. This feels like the best job in the world to me. 🫶
 
I live on the Gold Coast. I love life. I love to try new things, because there is so much in the world to experience. I know that our time is limited on this planet, so I want to squeeze every drop out of every moment. But, in our time in this world, human beings matter the most. That’s why doing this job is a privilege.
 
Working in the emergency department is such a human experience. In addition to the patients (the reason we are here) we get to hang out with a team. From the nurses, radiographers, administrative officers, security crew, wards team who make us delicious snacks on Sundays, pharmacists, to the paramedics, it’s a beautiful team who are a blast to spend time with. 😂
