From a small village in rural Bavaria to the halls of MIT and beyond, Ruth Gimeno always knew she wanted to make a difference. She initially thought it would be through work as a physician. She instead found a path that took her beyond helping people one-on-one and offered a much larger impact.
 
A rotation in a lab led Ruth to pursue a Ph.D. in cell biology at MIT to research how to make effective medicines. After spending time at a biotech company, the idea of a career in the pharmaceutical industry excited her.
 
“I loved the challenge of finding ground-breaking new therapies starting with pioneering fundamental discoveries,” she explains.
 
Ruth connected to the pharmaceutical research team environment at multiple companies. But it wasn’t until she joined Lilly that everything clicked.
 
“For me, everything came together at Lilly: a company focused on innovation, with a deep commitment to patients in a field I was passionate about, and colleagues who make coming to work each day a gratifying experience,” she says.
 
Metabolic research is a passion for Ruth. Today, she’s driven by the challenge to discover impactful medicines that can help a broad range of people.
 
That inspiration was fueled early in her career as she saw people in her personal life suffering from metabolic diseases—Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease—and felt compelled to do more to help them. Those experiences motivated her to keep searching for novel solutions. She knows Lilly has made considerable progress, but more work must be done.
 
That work is happening around the world by people from various backgrounds. Ruth says that’s one of the most exciting parts of being a researcher: learning from the people she works with. She’s also benefited from a strong network of women researchers and mentors.
 
“I love that people from multiple experiences come together to solve complex problems and impact people’s lives,” she says.
