"Before I could hardly speak I wanted to be a nurse. 🏥 Back in those days, where I grew up in England, it wasn't expected that women would become doctors. 🇬🇧 I liked the idea of helping those that were ill. When I was 14, I decided I wanted to be a biochemist. 🔬 I can vividly remember going to the town library and looking up the Biochemical Society of Britain, and I wrote a letter to them asking what courses I would need to take for that career. 📝 They sent me a nice letter back. I ended up majoring in Biochemistry at Cambridge University and went on to get my Ph.D. at Oxford University. 🎓 Space flight causes rapid loss of muscle mass and function, similar to people with muscle-wasting diseases and limited mobility on Earth. 🌎 We're looking at the impact of an investigational medicine on muscle wasting, to see if it could be used to treat those with diseases like muscular dystrophy, ALS, cancer and muscle weakness in elderly people. 👵🏽👴🏼 Interestingly, #space research isn't new to me. 🚀 Through #NASA during my post-doctoral training, I studied microgravity conditions. We used this strange machine called a clinostat to try and reproduce microgravity on Earth, not very successfully. I learned how to devise hardware to send research materials into space. 🌌 Lilly allows me to put my passion for #science and #biology to use every day. I work to develop potential new medicines to help people. This experiment with NASA is the perfect example of putting my passion to work." —Rosamund C.
