📍March 12th, 2026 outside Reseda Charter High School for the Khimberly Zavaleta Memorial Vigil.

A second candlelight vigil was held the following week in memory of 12-year-old Khimberly Zavaleta, who died after suffering head injuries during a school altercation on Feb. 17. Khimberly had been defending her older sister when she was struck in the head with a metal water bottle. As the community continues to process the loss, friends, relatives, classmates, and neighbors once again gathered to light candles and stand in remembrance of a young life taken too soon, her death continuing to weigh heavily on Reseda.

Khimberly’s mother, Elma Chuquipa, returned alongside family members and close friends, most notably the presence of Khimberly’s father. Students from Reseda Charter High School were again in attendance, joining community members who came to offer support and share memories. The event was organized by rchsunidos , a student led organization for social change operating independently from the Reseda Charter High School administration. The glow of candles stretched down the street as attendees embraced one another, the vigil serving as both a space for mourning and a continued call for safer conditions in schools.

Since the initial vigil, Khimberly’s family has begun pursuing legal action against the Los Angeles Unified School District, alleging negligence surrounding the circumstances that led to her injury. The effort comes alongside a growing petition for the proposed “Khimberly Act,” which calls for stronger head trauma screening protocols in hospitals, including more thorough examinations and imaging before patients with head injuries are discharged. Khimberly was treated and released following the Feb. 17 incident, but died on Feb. 25 after suffering a brain aneurysm linked to the injury. Together, the family’s legal action and advocacy reflect a continued push for accountability and systemic change in the wake of her death.
