Sheldrick Wildlife Trust left a real impression on me and not just for the reasons I expected. What they do here matters deeply. This is one of the world’s most important elephant rescue and rehabilitation programs, caring for orphaned elephants with the long-term goal of returning them to the wild. That work is extraordinary.

But I also left feeling that the visitor experience needs stronger guardrails.

There’s a real difference between observing wild animals responsibly and turning the moment into something more interactive than it should be. When people are focused on touching, posing, or getting closer than they should, the line starts to blur and that matters.

Both things can be true at once: this is vital conservation work, and parts of the public visit could be better enforced to protect the animals and the integrity of the experience.

I’m very glad I went. I’d still encourage others to visit, or to sponsor one of the orphaned elephants from anywhere in the world. But I also think ethical wildlife experiences only stay ethical when the boundaries are clear and upheld.
