For this week's Shabbat Shout Out, we recognize our Model United Nations (MUN) students and advisors, who spent the days leading up to Color War and Spring Break representing DJDS—and the State of Israel—at the National High School Model United Nations (NHSMUN) conference in Manhattan.

In rooms filled with more than 140 countries and thousands of delegates, our students took on a role that was as meaningful as it was complex: representing a country they know personally, while speaking with the objectivity, discipline, and composure of diplomats—at the real United Nations.

This was not a simple assignment, as you can imagine.

It required learning the language of diplomacy, navigating formal procedures, collaborating across delegations, and engaging in real-time debate—all while representing both their school and something much bigger.

As their faculty advisors shared, students grounded themselves in DJDS values—approaching every interaction with integrity, respect, and purpose. They learned not just how to speak, but how to listen, how to collaborate, and how to carry themselves in moments that required both confidence and restraint.

Upon reflecting on their experience, students spoke about the challenge of staying objective while defending positions they care deeply about, the difficulty of finding truly unbiased information, and the need to think diplomatically rather than react emotionally.

They described learning to focus on facts, to engage only in meaningful dialogue, and to build coalitions by identifying shared solutions—setting aside differences to move conversations forward.

They spoke about standing in front of hundreds of peers, advocating for collaboration, and finding the courage to engage even when the room felt large and the stakes felt high.

This was our school’s fifth year at NHSMUN—and for our seniors, many attending for the fourth time, a culmination of leadership, mentorship, and growth. They set the tone and passed that standard forward.

This experience asked a lot of our students. And they met it.

Shabbat Shalom.
