Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth quoted a fake Bible verse from the blockbuster movie “Pulp Fiction” during a Pentagon prayer service on Wednesday. A Public Witness, a religion and politics blog, first reported that Hegseth read the violent prayer from “Pulp Fiction” nearly word for word at Wednesday’s event. Hegseth said he wanted to read a prayer that was shared with him “from the lead mission planner of Sandy 1,” referring to the rescue operation to extract military pilots who were shot down in Iran earlier this month. Before beginning the prayer titled CSAR 25:17, Hegseth acknowledged that it is meant to “reflect” wording from Ezekiel 25:17 in the Bible. “The path of the downed aviator is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of camaraderie and duty, shepherd the lost through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children,” Hegseth said. “And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to capture and destroy my brother. And you will know my call sign is Sandy 1 when I lay my vengeance upon thee, and amen,” he concluded. The blog — and social media critics — pointed out that Hegseth’s prayer is nearly the same quote from Samuel L. Jackson’s character, Jules Winnfield, in director Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction.” Variety noted that the Bible verse used in “Pulp Fiction” was also falsely attributed to Ezekiel’s passage. The Pentagon pushed back on the criticism later on Thursday, arguing that Hegseth understood the quote was from “Pulp Fiction,” not the Bible. “Secretary Hegseth on Wednesday shared a custom prayer, referenced as the CSAR prayer, used by the brave warfighters of Sandy-1 who led the daylight rescue mission of Dude 44 Alpha out of Iran, which was obviously inspired by dialogue in Pulp Fiction,” Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell wrote on X. “However, both the CSAR prayer and the dialogue in Pulp Fiction were reflections of the verse Ezekiel 25:17, as Secretary Hegseth clearly said in his remarks at the prayer service. Anyone saying the Secretary misquoted Ezekiel 25:17 is peddling fake news and ignorant of reality,” he added. #pulpfictionedit #hegseth #pulpfiction
