Fun Fact: A Washington holiday you've probably never heard of — Temperance & Good Citizenship Day — was created during the height of Prohibition (AKA the era of banning booze).

What started as a day to talk about alcohol has evolved into a day for civic education. January 16 is a day for Washington public school students to learn about the power of voting and community engagement.

Public schools across the state will be holding voter registration events in observance.

Not 18 yet? That’s not a problem. 16 and 17-year-olds can sign up as #FutureVoters and automatically be registered to vote when they turn 18.

Teens can also sign up online at VoteWA.gov with identification such as a driver’s license, permit, state ID, or the last 4 digits of their Social Security number.

The perspective of young people in local issues matters — a lot. Voting in local elections and working together with our neighbors are two powerful ways to make tangible change in our communities.
