Surveillance companies like Ring, Axon, and Flock Safety rely on weak regulations and deceptive marketing to operate in our communities. But ordinary people are pushing back; it’s time for lawmakers to match that energy. 

In their joint op-ed for @thestrangerseattle, Danni Askini (Executive Director of @genderjusticewa) and Jaelyn Scott (Executive Director of @lavenderrightsproject) explain how the lack of guardrails on license plate reading cameras from companies like Flock make it easier for the Trump administration to target people in our state. 

Local agencies across Washington are increasingly using license plate readers to track people. But there are currently no safeguards on how agencies use this technology. 

What's worse: Without regulations, ICE and Border Patrol can access the sensitive data these cameras capture on Washingtonians — and they already have. 

The Driver Privacy Act is a bill that could help regulate local use of license plate readers. But the current version of the bill does not go far enough to protect our privacy. That’s why we’re calling on our representatives to strengthen and pass it.
