Last week, Washington lawmakers passed the Driver Privacy Act. While we are disappointed they did not pass stronger safeguards to reign in the use of automated license plate readers (ALPRs or “Flock cameras”) in our state, the bill provides some important protections for Washington drivers. 

One key protection is that data can no longer be collected around sensitive locations like where you go for reproductive or gender-affirming care, places of worship, and places that provide immigration services. 

Unfortunately, other key protections from the bill were significantly watered down, and as a result, agencies can still hold on to data about people's driving routines for far too long. We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: Washingtonians deserve to drive around our communities without the government tracking our daily routines. 

We know there is more work to be done to address the threat ALPRs pose to our privacy and safety. 

We'll keep fighting until everyone in our state is protected from the full range of harms of mass surveillance – this bill is just the beginning.
