UWA Sport is pleased to announce Keely O’Brien and Mat Glasson as the head coaches of the 2025 UWA Maali teams, set to compete in the fifth edition of the New Balance University Basketball League (UBL).

Both coaches emerged during a competitive recruitment process, with their extensive coaching experience and coaching philosophies aligning with the Maali’s aspirations.

Keely O’Brien has been appointed as the Head Coach of the UWA Women’s team for 2025. A rising force in Australian Basketball, Keely was recently named High Performance Coach of the Year at the WA Basketball Awards and led the U15 Girls’ team to a national title at the 2024 Southern Cross Challenge. With over a decade of experience under her belt, Keely’s most recent roles include coaching the U16 and U18 WA State Performance teams. Keely is known for her athlete-first approach, her ability to connect deeply with young people and her commitment to skill development and team cohesion.

Mat Glasson is the Head Coach of the UWA Men’s team for 2025. With over 30 years of coaching experience across Australia and the UK, Mat brings a wealth of expertise including national championships, NBL1 Coach of the Year honours, and a proven track record of developing elite athletes.

We thank our previous Head Coaches, Jackson Mews and Matthew Mercer, for their contribution to the Maali legacy during their tenure.
