Nebraska volleyball’s spring opener provided a first look at the Huskers’ highly touted freshman class, and early returns were promising.

In Nebraska’s exhibition win over Iowa State at the Sanford Pentagon, all three early enrollees — outside hitters Gabby DiVita and Jayden Robinson, and middle blocker Keoni Williams — saw action in a Big Red uniform for the first time.

Head coach Dani Busboom Kelly said the trio has already made an impact.

“They’ve been great in practices and they’ve raised the level of our gym,” Busboom Kelly said. “They bring a really fun joy to the game, and it’s great to see them step up. I thought they all three had some really good moments.”

DiVita, a six-rotation outside hitter from Michigan, showed confidence beyond her years. One of the top all-around prospects in the country, she finished with three kills and displayed the versatility that made her a highly ranked recruit.

“This has been a dream of mine for a really long time,” DiVita said. “Just getting to play with this group — we had so much fun out there.”

Robinson, a 6-foot-3 outside/opposite hitter from Texas with international experience, added two kills, bringing power and athleticism to the Huskers’ attack.

Williams, a 6-4 middle blocker and another top-10 national prospect, contributed three kills while providing a physical presence at the net.

Busboom Kelly said the group’s skill set — including physicality, versatility and volleyball IQ — has translated quickly from practice to game action.

“Sometimes it doesn’t correlate from practice for freshmen, but today it did,” she said.

The spring season offers Nebraska an opportunity to evaluate roles and build chemistry ahead of the fall campaign, particularly with multiple lineup spots still up for competition.

“With the spring, there’s less pressure,” Busboom Kelly said. “You really just focus on getting better each day and building relationships and team culture.”

As the Huskers continue their spring schedule, Busboom Kelly said playing time will be earned — but the early signs suggest the freshmen will be part of the conversation.

“If they can play, they’ll play,” she said.

Nebraska will continue its spring slate next weekend at Creighton on April 17th.
