Nebraska volleyball begins its spring slate Saturday with a matchup against Iowa State at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

The exhibition marks the first of three spring matches for the Huskers, who are using the condensed schedule to build on progress made during the offseason.

Coach Dani Busboom Kelly described the match as a valuable opportunity for growth in a competitive setting.

“It’s sort of like a glorified practice,” Busboom Kelly said. “But you get to play against an opponent, in front of fans, with that added pressure and a different vibe. I think that’s what this team needs.”

Nebraska plans to utilize its depth, with all players expected to see action.

“We have a deep roster, so we’re not going to be overworking anybody,” she said. “Everybody’s going to get to play, and I think it’ll be really fun in a great arena.”

Saturday’s match also serves as a homecoming for All-American setter Bergen Reilly, a Sioux Falls native and reigning Big Ten Player of the Year.

“It’s going to be awesome,” Reilly said. “There’s a lot of people that haven’t been able to come down to Lincoln, so I’m excited that friends and family get to come and I get to see them. I have a lot of memories at the Pentagon.”

Now in her second year leading the program, Busboom Kelly said the team has shown improved chemistry and cohesion compared to last spring.

“We’ve had a year under our belt,” she said. “From a coaching standpoint, it’s been easier because the personal relationships are there.”

Nebraska will continue its spring schedule April 17 at Creighton before closing April 25 against Northern Colorado in Chadron.

First serve Saturday is set for 1 p.m.
