They say don’t meet your heroes.

For one young Nebraska volleyball fan, that idea turned out to be wrong.

Harper, a devoted Husker supporter from South Dakota, had admired All-American Andi Jackson long before ever seeing her in person. Drawn to Jackson’s energy and positivity — always smiling, always supporting her teammates — Harper made the six-hour trip to Lincoln last November to watch Nebraska play inside the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Months later, she got another opportunity.

After receiving a message that she had won a raffle for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Devaney Center, Harper returned to Lincoln expecting a closer look at the program she loved.

Instead, she got something more.

Jackson surprised Harper during the visit, turning what was supposed to be a tour into a personal meeting with the player she had long looked up to.

“She came to one of our previous games and had a sign, and unfortunately I wasn’t able to sign it,” Jackson said. “We wanted to do something nice for her and show our appreciation. We surprised her, and she had the best reaction. We just talked — life, volleyball — and it was a great time.”

For Harper, the moment was overwhelming.

“I thought we were going to the Bob, and then I saw her,” she said. “I didn’t even know what to think. I was just flabbergasted.”

The meeting turned admiration into something more personal — a reminder that the connection between Nebraska volleyball and its fans extends far beyond the court.

“She is the person I thought she’d be,” Harper said. “Most people wouldn’t want to come on a Tuesday morning to meet someone, but she did. That means a lot.”

For Jackson, moments like that are part of a larger purpose.

“Fans like Harper make it super special,” she said. “They’re our why. They’re the reason we work so hard. Seeing them at games, holding signs — it means everything.”

There was no match, no crowd, no spotlight — just a conversation between a player and a fan who had traveled miles for the chance to be close to the game she loves.

“It’s the best birthday present you could ever get,” Harper said. “You never get to be that close to them.”

In a program known for its national success and global reach, Jackson said it’s the fans who make Nebraska volleyball unique.

“You wouldn’t find many places where someone drives six hours and misses school just to come say hi,” she said. “That’s what makes this so special.”

For Harper, the experience left a lasting impression — one that went beyond volleyball.

The hero she once dreamed of meeting had become something more real.

And maybe, something even better than she imagined.
