The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a non-profit civil rights organization focused on fighting against white supremacy, is charged with 6 counts of wire fraud, 4 counts of band fraud and 1 count of conspiracy to commit money laundering.

The DOJ's indictment alleges that beginning in 1980, the SPLC started a network of informants or “field sources” that were associated with violent extremist groups or directed to infiltrate such groups.

The field sources were then paid by the SPLC in a covert manner and those funds would benefit the hate groups without donor knowledge.

Between 2014 and 2023 the these informants were allegedly paid over $3 million in total by the SPLC.

These groups included the Ku Klux Klan, United Klans of America, Unite the Right, National Alliance, National Socialist Movement, Aryan Nations affiliated Sadistic Souls Motorcycle Club, National Socialist Party of America (American Nazi Party) and American Front.

Contrary to the indictment’s characterization, the SPLC’s interim CEO, Bryan Fair, said the informants helped save lives by gathering intelligence on hate groups which the SPLC shared with local and federal law enforcement, including the FBI.

Conservatives have frequently accused the SPLC of being biased against right-wing organizations and Patel last year said the non-profit was a “partisan smear machine.”
