This is Jack.
He’s ten years old.
Bermondsey, London, 1875.
Jack worked as a vat boy in one of the most poisonous places in Britain — the tanneries.
His job? Stirring vats filled with toxic chemicals, lime, and arsenic.
The fumes burned his eyes. The chemicals ate into his skin.
He was only eight when he started.
One day he slipped…
and fell headfirst into a boiling vat of tanning liquor.
The chemicals burned him from the inside out.
He died in agony hours later.
This was official British child labour law.
Bermondsey, 1875. When sending ten-year-old boys to work with deadly chemicals was perfectly legal.
This was legal.
Drop a heart for Jack.
