MONARCHS TAKE DOWN LIONS: The jserra.baseball team dropped its Trinity League series opener with Mater Dei on Tuesday, as the Monarch edged the Lions 6-5 at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana.

Senior Brise Boop put the Lions ahead 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning, when he blasted a two-run homerun to left field, his fourth of the season.

Mater Dei responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-2 lead.

JSerra used the long ball to tie the game in the top of the fifth inning.

Sophomore Owen Mescall connected on a solo homerun to left (his first of the season) to cut the deficit to one run, and on the next pitch, senior Blake Bowen blasted a solo shot over the right field wall (his team-leading sixth of the season.)

Mater Dei recaptured the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Boop narrowed the deficit to one-run with a one-out sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning, but the Monarchs recorded the final out to seal the series-opening triumph.

The Lions and Monarchs will resume their series on Wednesday at JSerra Catholic High School.

First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
