FilmGate Miami’s reimagined actor, writer, and industry meet-up is back at the El Oro Theater in the Downtown Media Center for another night of live script readings, creative discovery, and connection.

As Florida’s longest-running cold read event, Why the Drama? continues to create space for South Florida artists to craft, critique, and expand new work while giving actors, writers, filmmakers, casting professionals, and industry guests a chance to witness local talent in the room.

This edition features live read-throughs of:
🩸 Biting Susan — written by Yamil Rodriguez & Michael Arcos
In 1991, a preteen boy’s final week with his best friend and first love spirals into an unhinged folk-horror adventure on their suburban cul-de-sac, ending in one confused, impulsive bite.

🎞️ Grub Street — written by Scott Grainger
A small Miami film production company trying to make meaningful work must do whatever it takes to stay afloat — even if that means bending the rules along the way.

🚬 CIG — written by David Hamzik
A young man chasing status through a wealthy relationship is pushed to confront his own nature as his resentment and ambition boil over.
