April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM).⁣
⁣
It is an important time to recognise the profound impact of sexual assault, and the role we all play in preventing it. It’s also a chance to acknowledge the dedicated investigators working behind the scenes to support victims and hold offenders to account.⁣
⁣
Detective Acting Sergeant Kerri-Ann is one of those people.⁣
⁣
With 22 years in policing including the last 5 years spent working in Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Teams (SOCIT), she works every day to support victims through some of the most difficult times in their lives.⁣
⁣
This year’s SAAM theme focuses on the link between technology and gender-based violence.⁣
⁣
Kerri-Ann speaks of how online sexual offending - particularly amongst the younger generation - is a growing trend.⁣
⁣
"Educating young people is the first step in minimising harm in this space.”⁣
⁣
SOCIT Detectives work closely with Child Protection to educate young people about online safety and the risks involved in sharing intimate images.⁣
⁣
Her advice?⁣
• Protect yourself. Before sending anything online, ask yourself “How would I feel if this was shared?”⁣
• Be alert. Who is the person behind the profile? They may not be who they say they are.⁣
• Ask for help. If you feel uneasy or scared about your online activity, speak to a trusted adult at the earliest opportunity.⁣
• Help and support is available – don’t be afraid to ask for help.⁣
