When Lloyd Center opened on Aug. 1, 1960, it arrived with two national distinctions: It was both the largest shopping mall in the United States and the first to feature an ice-skating rink.

That ice rink likely would never have happened were it not for the granddaughter of industrialist Ralph B. Lloyd.
