🚀⚖️🇺🇳 That’s a wrap on the 65th session of LSC!
 
Over two weeks, Member States, observers and experts in COPUOS’s Legal Subcommittee advanced discussions on some of the most pressing legal questions in outer space governance to meet a rapidly changing space environment.
 
Key developments included:
 
⛏️ Space Resource Activities
The Working Group adopted an action-oriented report and agreed that its Chair and Vice-Chair will prepare a consolidated version of the draft set of recommended principles on space resource activities.
 
🌚 Lunar Activities
Through the Action Team on Lunar Activities Consultation (ATLAC), delegations exchanged views on key challenges related to lunar activities, including ideas for a possible international mechanism and priority topics. Draft recommendations will be put up for consideration by COPUOS in June.

📜 Status of the Five UN Treaties
The Working Group continued discussions on implementation of space activities under Article XI of the Outer Space Treaty, including a voluntary tool to share information on private sector space activities. A draft template moved closer to agreement, to be agreed on for adoption at the 66th session in 2027.
 
Alongside the formal session, side events by the United States🇺🇸 and South Africa🇿🇦 on space resource activities, authorisation of commercial activities, and the upcoming Africa Space Law & Policy conference continued to show how legal and policy discussions are being translated into practice.
 
A highlight for UNOOSA was our Global Space Law Project side event. It showcased how the Office supports countries in turning international space law into practical national frameworks, policies and operational capacity — helping Member States build the legal foundations for safe, sustainable and inclusive space activities.
