The hospitality industry is obsessed with the wrong question “who is our target audience?”

We’ve all been so focused on ‘who’ that I see many forgetting ‘why’.

Focusing on ‘who’ made sense ten years ago but today, it’s holding business back.

Identity has been commoditised: our traits, experiences, and social roles are packaged, branded, and sold as a product.

- Subculture access can now be bought pretty much off the shelf.
- The definition of luxury is constantly evolving.
- Two-thirds of the world’s wealthiest are now self-made and prioritise momentum over the preservation favoured by previous generations.

Our world is essentially - ultra fast.

We have come from a world where wealth, identity and status were earned over time, slowly and cemented within peer groups. You always ate at X, stayed at Y, and lived in Z neighbourhood to be somebody.

But today, people’s access and identity move freely, fast and are publicly broadcast - societally we’ve become ‘brand promiscuous’.

So with all that... age, income, nationality, interests... these don’t really stand still in time any longer, and nor do they explain *at all* why someone expresses interest.

They don’t explain timing and they definitely don’t explain intent.

What matters now isn’t who someone is, but what they want in that moment.

When someone searches “Quiet luxury resort no kids” = that’s emotional intent.
“Luxury Antarctica cruise with expert guides” = aspiration.

AI search and algorithms don’t and won’t care about personas, they care about signals, language, and behaviour.

It’s outdated to think your customer is your customer because of their demographic - and that’s also not how you present to people anymore.

Everything we see is interest based ... intent based.

The brands that win won’t target louder.
They’ll be more relevant and visible at the exact moment someone is ready to decide.

Demographics tell you who someone was but intent tells you what they’re about to do.

And in hospitality, timing beats targeting - every time.
