Years of hard work, sacrifice, and dedication have led Ricky Ortiz to the next chapter of his wrestling journey as he commits to continue his career at Southern Oregon University.

Ortiz began wrestling at just four years old and has spent the last 14 years building toward this moment. Through extra runs, extra practices, and countless hours of discipline, he turned years of effort into a college opportunity.

Ricky Ortiz:

“When you look back at everything it took to get here, it means everything that I have done since I was a little kid paid off. I worked so hard throughout high school — extra runs, extra practices, extra everything — and every hour of that paid off. Honestly, I wish I worked even harder, but I’m grateful for this opportunity to wrestle another 4-5 years.”

“When I made my decision, I first thought about my parents, my brothers, my coaches, and my wrestling partner DayDayz. They’ve meant so much to me during my 14 years of wrestling. They’ve been there through the highs and lows and gave me opportunities many times to show how great I really am.”

Ortiz carries a 3.18 GPA and credits Brawley Wrestling Academy, his family, faith, and Brawley Union High School for helping shape his path.

Head Coach Sawyer Smith:

“I’m excited for this next chapter of Ricky’s life. He was a much needed personality on the team these past few years and we’re definitely going to miss him. We really appreciated being a small part of his journey and can’t wait to see the young man he continues to develop into at his new home in Oregon.”

Southern Oregon gains a wrestler with experience, toughness, and pride from one of the strongest wrestling communities in the Imperial Valley and San Diego
