In times of war and uncertainty, people often search for ways to feel some control over their lives. In Russia today, rising conflict and economic stress have led many people to turn toward witchcraft, fortune-telling, and spiritual practices. This might look irrational at first, but sociologically it makes sense. Bronisław Malinowski explained that when situations become unpredictable, people rely on magic and rituals to reduce fear and anxiety. For example, he observed that fishermen used skills in safe waters but turned to rituals when going into dangerous seas. Similarly, Russian soldiers contacting fortune-tellers or families buying protective charms can be seen as attempts to cope with uncertainty and risk.

At the same time, Margaret Mead helps us understand that these behaviours are shaped by culture. People don’t randomly choose beliefs; they follow what is already present in their society. In Russia, a mix of Orthodox Christianity, folk traditions, and popular media has long included mystical elements. So turning to tarot readings or spiritual healers is not new, it’s culturally familiar. For instance, people may visit psychics for relationship advice or carry crystals for protection, especially during stressful times.

In this way, magic and spirituality become everyday tools for managing fear, uncertainty, and emotional stress.
