New medical technologies enabled by lasers, the creation of atomic clocks, the foundations for space travel and even this 3D-printed Lamborghini designed by ThorLabs research scientist Sterling Backus all found inspiration in a lab.
 
In celebration of #WorldLaboratoryDay, he offered a sneak peek into his lab, where he is currently working on developing a medical laser to improve people's lives.
 
When Dr. Backus encounters a problem in the lab, he shares his approach to finding a solution: “I go back to the basics. If that does not work, I use my large network of experts in the field to help solve the problem.”
