“For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.” -Psalm 62:5-6

Silence is not emptiness, absence, or inactivity. Being still is a quiet confidence, a trust that needs no striving. The water rests, the mountains stand firm, there is peace. There is no urgency, no rush to put out or become something more.

Yet, we are often not at peace. Our minds wander, our thoughts race; we strive to look ahead, trying to secure what we cannot control. We live in a world where silence and waiting feel like weakness or falling behind. It’s uncomfortable.

Be uncomfortable! Speak to your soul, compel it to quiet the noise. We are called to wait in silence for God alone. Not trusting in anything else, not what we build, hold, or control. There is no security that compares. If God is set alongside other foundations, then He is no foundation at all. To trust God partly, is to not trust Him at all. God alone is our rock and our salvation, our defense and refuge.

With a firm foundation, a strong salvation and fortress, there is naught that can sway us. This isn’t something that we can do, but simply by trusting and committing ourselves to the LORD. While we may be shaken by circumstance, we shall never be moved from the One in whom we seek refuge.
